On this week’s episode of Movie Mindset, Will and Hesse are joined by Noah Kulwin of Blowback to examine a pair of films from legendary American filmmaker and alcohol enthusiast Sam Peckinpah. First up is Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) an elegiac western starring James Coburn and Kris Kristofferson as the titular historical figures and friends who find themselves on the opposite side of the law paving a path to each other by killing almost everyone they encounter. Beans are eaten, whiskey is slurped, men are killed, and the music and acting chops of Bob Dylan make an appearance. Next is Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) which finds Peckinpah mainstay Warren Oates as a thinly-veiled version of the director himself, an American expat in Mexico who takes his prostitute girlfriend on a charming trip into the countryside to retrieve the head off the corpse of her ex. Tequila is chugged, crabs are picked off genitals and dozens ore shot to death.
