Summary:
The following excerpt is from letters between Lewis H. Douglass and H. Amelia Loguen, whom he later married. He was a son of Frederick Douglass, and she the daughter of Bishop J. W. Loguen, a distinguished churchman who became a bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
These letters and more were exchanged as he fought in the American Civil War (1861-1865), to in his words, “... aid in the glorious work to the overthrow a system of cruelty and tyranny, bursting loose those chains which keeps the husbands, wives, children, lovers and friends, of millions asunder.”
